Application Note: Rabies RNA extraction using Redbud NA1

This application note presents data from a public health evaluation of the Redbud NA1™ system for automated rabies viral RNA extraction from post-mortem animal brain tissue. Designed to support molecular workflows using the LN34 pan-lyssavirus RT-qPCR assay, the study demonstrates Redbud NA1's ability to deliver rapid, accurate, and safe extractions in rabies testing environments.

Purpose:
To assess Redbud NA1 as a practical alternative to the traditional direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test by simplifying sample prep, reducing hands-on time, and enabling molecular rabies testing in labs with minimal molecular training or infrastructure.

  • Achieved 100% sensitivity and specificity using LN34 RT-qPCR on DFA-validated samples (N=72)

  • Comparable total turnaround time to DFA, with ~50% less hands-on time

  • Setup and training time under one hour for new users

  • Virus inactivation validated using lysis/binding buffer (5 min at room temp)
